Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos will bring a special ensemble to Dizzy's this Friday, July 1. The band will include his regular pianist, Irving Flores, Lorraine Castellanos on vocals, bassist Evona Wascinski, and on percussion...tap dancer Claudia Gomez Vorce.
These days, the concept of using a dancer as drummer might seem pretty avant garde, but tapping is an important part of jazz history.
The father of modern jazz drumming, Papa Jo Jones, began as a dancer, as did the notorious Buddy Rich. Perhaps the virtuoso of them all was "Baby" Laurence (Jackson), who, in 1960 played a long-term engagement with Charles Mingus at The Showplace in NYC.
Reports of that gig are legendary, and, unfortunately apocryphal, since no recordings exist.
Castellanos met Gomez Vorce a few years back when she sat in on one of his weekly jam sessions. "It was instant magic sharing the stage with her," said the trumpeter.
Gomez Vorce will handle all of the percussion parts on a night of mainstream jazz, Latin, tangos and original music.
The tap dancer is reportedly moving to New Orleans next month, so Friday's gig represents a unique opportunity to experience this unusual collaboration. Concert starts at 8:00 p.m.
