New Local Recording Studio Must Be Delirious

As the music industry continues to be shaken up by the decline of traditional record labels in favor of DIY recording and self-marketing, several local recording studios have found themselves developing their own record labels as well. One new facility headquartered in Mission Valley, Delirious Records, is coming straight out of the gate with this dual application of its resources.

Opened in March, Delirious is based on Camino Del Rio South. “Our studio was built by the same people who built Slash's Malibu studio,” says Thomas Knepper, a former member of the band Tripp who cofounded the studio with two other members from that group. “Our technology is state of the art, and we cater to younger musicians who need a place to hone their skills.”

Studio facilities use i7 powering Logic Pro9 and Pro-Tools9, while their Studio B uses a floating wall and full soundproofing. “The Mxl microphones are precision wired and calibrated to provide the utmost clarity for even the most delicate studio applications,” says Knepper. Recording time starts at $70 per hour, rehearsal time at $30 hourly, and the facility rents rehearsal rooms starting at $650 per month.

The studio/label is already building a “house” roster of performers. “We signed TES [aka Timothy Edward Shelton] under our label,” says Knepper. “Tim is a forward on the SDSU basketball team and going into his final year. He released a mixtape under our label [and] he’s had a few shows, with his last one at Bar Dynamite on June 15." Delirious plans to release his first single in July.

The TES mix tape is available for download at http://www.hotnewhiphop.com/en/view-album/14373-something-like-an-introduction.

In addition to the studio and rehearsal rooms, Delirious also plans on hosting guitar, drum, and vocal lessons, at $30 hourly. According to Knepper, “We’re interested this fall in advertising to high schools and community colleges around the city hoping to provide a safe location for students to practice their music after school and to save some parents from the noise coming from their garage.”
