Humboldt County nu-grass spankers Bucky Walters are coming to town next Wednesday, June 15 at the Soda Bar, for a knee-slappin’, beer spillin’, whoopin’ and a’wailin’ hill howlin’ hullabaloo.
“I’m so happy because I’m coming down to San Diego with some of the best friends in my life, all friends I got together with in Humboldt, who I’ve never had come to my hometown,” says East County native Bryan Osper (gtr/vox) in a phone call from San Francisco. “We’re also going to Niko’s [bass/mandolin/vox] hometown in Lake Arrowhead and we just went to Joey’s [banjo/vox] home in Mendocino.”
Osper, a pal of mine since the high school daze at Valhalla and roommate for a stretch as students at Humboldt State University, will be sharing the line-up with fellow Valhalla Viking Aaron Brownwood (pedal steel/dobro/gtr) of alt-country outfit The Western Set.
“I was reading an article in a magazine the other day about how Americana music is really hip in the underground,” says Osper. “So I’m really looking forward to seeing that in San Diego. I feel like we’re in an interesting time with string bands. It’s been six years for us now, and it's cool to see how far the music has come. I’m really looking forward to seeing my friends from high school playing their tunes.”
