Friday’s show was a true orgy of awesome. The ever-lively Bar Monaco is Mexicali’s go-to happening music venue and art space. Think Tower Bar meets Mos Eisley Cantina with $2 mostly imported beer and monthly installations in the upstairs gallery. I missed THErapist's set and my camera was temporarily destroyed while lurching around to Batwings, so you’ll just have to imagine chicalense trio Maniqui Lazer in matching black sleeveless hoodies playing an abbreviated rendition of "Sonic Sex".
Hot Nerds, a recent collaboration of drummer Nathan Joyner (All Leather, Leg Lifters, Secret Fun Club, Some Girls) and keyboardist Alia Jayawook (Christwaves, Say Wen, Kata, Bitter Sober, Tiny Telephones), loosened hips with dancey beats and alien vocoder vox.
Batwing’s new lineup featuring bassist Scott Stage (SnailS!) and singer Carlos Quintero (Lipstick Terror, Chrome Eye) gave a high-velocity set reciprocated with ample bobbling of bodies and spilt beer.
!
Pure magic.
