Second Annual June Gloom

"The first June Gloom was June of 2010," writes musician and promoter Sam Lopez aka Zsa Zsa Gabor, who has been playing noise music for about five years and promoting for the past three. "The music I pick for June Gloom is mostly ritualistic or mildly occult. My thought for June Gloom was to have a show every week in the month of June. The performers had to have some degree of darkness to their set. This year I scaled it down to just one day.

"I've been into noise music since the mid-nineties. It was Merzbow who really opened my mind and ears to this style of music. His Relapse release Venerealogy was sort of my gateway drug. It literally was the most extreme music I have ever heard as Relapse had advertised.

"Noise is the ultimate release. I've said things musically in lyrical verse and structured chords but always felt trapped in certain points of my musical travels. Noise music freed that notion and allowed me to say things both sonically and visually that "straight" music could not. My music is also physical and noise music allows me to flex my muscles via feedback.

"All of the performers in this year's June Gloom have experimental or noise roots. That's the key! There is also some sort of ritualistic aspect to them as well that makes it a perfect fit for the night."

June Gloom will be on Saturday June 25 at the Kava Lounge featuring performances from High Mountain Tempel, Ogd_s(11) (Nathan Hubbard), The Armory Show, and 60's Residue.
