About a $3 taxi ride from the border, Bar Monaco in Mexicali is a popular spot for both touring and local punk/noise/electronic bands. Shows tend to get entirely awesome at this Tower-Bar-meets-Mos-Eisley-Cantina dive, and I suspect tonight will be no different.
Batwings Catwings – Rad girl-fronted Los Angeles dancey punk on Indian Gold Records, a web-based label founded by Jung Sing and Valentin Torres of Mexicali’s Maniqui Lazer.
Therapist – This disco punk trio from Arizona and Mexicali’s sister city, Calexico, played Thursday’s monthly experimental/dance/punk night Makeout Weird at the Whistle Stop.
Noise Beat Propaganda – Mexicali dance punk (think Moving Units with driving fem vox) featuring members of X=R7. Read about a recent house show at drummer Shyno’s place here.
Maniqui Lazer – One of the more prominent names from Mexicali, this lazer punk trio shares drummer Jung Sing with San Diego electro-core outfit All Leather.
