Benefit Concert Will Pay Tribute to John Kuhlken

The July 23 Class of ’94 Reunion at Bar Eleven will double as a John Kuhlken Tribute and Benefit Concert for City of Hope.

Five bands with '90s roots (sans mullets) will be hookin’ back up to reunite and rock the bar: Julie Mack, 30 Second President, Skunk Drunk, Deep in the Shed, and the MacAnanys.

"I was in Skunk Drunk back in the day," says Joe Macaskill, currently of Pony Death Ride. "John Kulkhen drummed in most of those bands, including Skunk Drunk, and had planned to play with each band on the bill. John passed away two months ago, so now the show has been changed into a benefit for the City of Hope."

John Kuhlken passed away May 20 at the age of 49, due to a blood infection. A survivor of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, “He was the best friend and the best drummer we all knew,” says John Vaughn, bassist for Deep in the Shed. "We have been planning this since February before John passed. None of us ever know when our time is up..."

Born in 1961, Kuhlken attended Patrick Henry High in San Carlos and graduated from SDSU. Among the other bands he drummed for are the Nards, the Slidewinders, Brawley, and the Targets.

"Special guests will be who ever show up that want to play the Rolling Stones, the Ramones, or whatever," says Macaskill. "Clark Griswold will only be there in spirit. Maybe Cousin Eddy might show. There is awesome food and crafted beer. Bar Eleven Manager Louis Mello said that they will also 'gift' a percentage of the bar to City Of Hope."

When: Saturday, July 23, 2011 7p.m. to 1 a.m.

Where: Eleven 3519 El Cajon Blvd. (between 35th & Wilson Ave. West side of street)

$10 Admission will be gifted to The City Of Hope in honor of John Kuhlken.

City of Hope is recognized worldwide for its compassionate patient care, innovative science and translational research, which rapidly turns laboratory breakthroughs into promising new therapies. For nearly 100 years, City of Hope’s pioneering research has brought the world closer to cures for many life-threatening diseases, from cancer to diabetes.

Says Macaskill , "We will also celebrate John Kuhlken’s birthday at the Ould Sod on Sunday, July 31, with lots of surprises."
