Jacqueline du Pre was best known for her definitive interpretation of the Elgar Cello Concerto. She was 20 years old when she recorded it for EMI and it has remained in print since it was recorded in 1965.
In the 1960's du Pre was a prodigy who made good on her talent. She was one of the brightest of a young generation of performers which included Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zuckerman, Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta.
She and Barenboim were married 1967. As far as I can tell they were never divorced but he did have a relationship and two sons by another woman in the 1980's.
In 1973 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The disease began to affect her playing as she lost feeling in her fingers. She was still able to play by visually guiding her fingers during a performance but her career was over.
She died 1987.
Jacqueline's sister and brother wrote a book about their family life called A Genius in the Family. In 1998 it was turned into an Oscar nominated film titled Hilary and Jackie.
The film was controversial in it's portrayal of Jacqueline but her sister Hilary stood by the film and claimed that Jackie would have loved it.
