Instead of just one hit wonders of classical music, I think I'm going add an "and one" element.
If Elgar's one hit wonder is Pomp and Circumstance, his "and one" would be the Introduction and Allegro for Strings or perhaps Nimrod from his Enigma Variations. The Nimrod theme was used well in the movie Elizabeth. They added a soprano vocal to the main theme and I thought the effect worked for the scene. Oh yes, there's also the Cello Concerto which was featured in the movie Hillary and Jackie.
Maybe Elgar isn't a good example because now I'm side tracked onto the cellist Jacqueline DuPre and the controversy of the movie Hillary and Jackie.
