Viejas Casino and Jack FM 100.7 are presenting the annual Ultimate Music Challenge, featuring 40 cover bands, three winners, and $40K in prize money.
The fifth annual contest will be held at the DreamCatcher at Viejas Casino. The competition will be held August 14 through October 23, every Sunday night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Up to five bands will perform each Sunday, with the winning bands advancing to the semifinals, then to the championship on October 23. The performances are free to attend, but you must be at least 21 years old.
The winning cover band takes home $25,000, second place earns $10,000 and third place pays $5,000. A panel of judges will score each band’s performance in the categories of showmanship, musical ability, and audience response.
Cover bands competing this year represent many genres of music, including rock, R&B, pop, funk, Latin, honky tonk.
Carissa Shroeder of Siren's Crush, UMC 4 finalists, has some advice for this year's contestants. "Screw your humble attitudes and approach that thing like you’ve already made it to the finals. Prepare three distinct and unarguably great performances before you ever begin playing the first note of the first round. Space your secret weapons accordingly, and don’t blow your wad too early."
Sean Glithero of Cash'd Out, UMC 1 winner, says "“Don’t blow your wad on the first night. Vary tempos, keys, song styles, etc. Put something in the final performance that the judges have never seen or heard before. Promote the hell out of it and get your fan base believing that you can win it.”
Rebecca Jade of Super Magnetic, last year's UMC 4 winner, says "Strategically pace yourself. Always put your best foot forward at whatever round you’re in, but still keep something in your back pocket that is the essence of your band so that if you’ve done well enough and you keep advancing, you have some fire power left to help you take the prize home!"
Charlie Swatts of Rolling the Stones, UMC 3 Winners, advises "It’s a show: put one on. Rehearse 20 minutes of your best material until you’re sick and let go of it after that. In the motto of the Boy Scouts, be prepared! It’s so important to engage the audience. That’s your job as an entertainer. Take the time to consider everything: lighting and sound needs, guitar tones, costumes, choreography, showmanship, musicianship, crowd participation and noise. Everything.”

THE JUDGES:
Chris Boyer is an on-air personality for Jack FM 100.7 and has been part of the Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw morning radio show since the beginning. He is primarily known for two things: his strong opinions on matters in which he has NO experience, and his ability on the drums. When he isn’t being ridiculed by Dave and Chainsaw for his merit-less arguments, Boyer spends time with his two dogs, JACK and Rockford.
Alicia Champion is an award-winning performer and record producer who’s worked with Pink, Melissa Etheridge, and James Taylor, among others. Winner of VH1′s reality based competition You Rock With..., Alicia is also cofounder and executive producer of the San Diego IndieFest.
Edwin Decker is an award-losing freelance music journalist and humor columnist. His lone brush with musical greatness was collaborating with Ray Manzarek (the Doors) on a series of short radio spots called “Classic Covers.” Decker is on staff of the San Diego IndieFest, San Diego Music Awards, and the Southern California Writer’s Conference. His book of sarcastic anti-poetry, Barzilla and Other Psalms was nominated (and soundly defeated) for a 2007 San Diego Book Award for Best Poetry.
