Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, like most jazz musicians, has to keep many irons in the fire to stay busy and keep the bills paid. In addition to his local performances with his Latin Jazz Quintet, his B-3 organ trio, and as a member of Charles McPherson's group, Castellanos teaches at the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music and plays with the LA big-band, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.
In this latter capacity, he's on the second week of an international tour that began July 7 at Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany. The very next night had the group playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands. They played at midnight, following Esperanza Spaulding, Natalie Cole, and Return To Forever IV.
July 9 found them in the Auditorio de Tenerife Adan Martin Sala de Camera and July 10 at Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, both in the Canary Islands.
The tour finishes up on July 13 in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Castellanos will return to San Diego on the 15th, ready to resume his resident jam-session gig on Wednesday July 20 at El Camino in Little Italy.
