An on-and-off San Diego resident since the age of 13, Rukus, now 30, says that music saved his life.
“San Diego has built an amazing electronic music scene with some of the most gifted DJs in the world,” says Rukus.
“Being in the shadows of the LA music scene, I have always felt that San Diego DJs have been overlooked by the international music scene. This is why I feel compelled to throw events that showcase these phenomenal DJs, who are not just great at mixing two records together of the same genre, but are well-versed in multiple genres and are producing some chart-topping tracks. I respect San Diego DJs so much that I have dedicated most of my life to supporting them in any way possible.”
Most of Rukus’ events past have been underground (“warehouses, beaches, deserts, unadvertised venue shows, you name it”) showcases of local electronic luminaries including JQ, Puppy Kicker, EshOne, Ubiquitous, Austin Speed, Ghost M.D., and Skandar.
While Rukus has been curating Hype night annually for the past four years on his April 15 birthday, this Friday’s event is the first to break that trend in order to inaugurate a periodic Hype night every two months or so (the following will be in February).
“This month’s edition of (((HYPE))) features one of San Diego's hottest DJ's, Ubiquitous,” writes Rukus.
“From rockin’ it at renegade parties on the beach to destroying it at California's premier outdoor festivals and everything in between, Ubiquitous has been sent by unknown forces to destroy the population of male DJ egos, and is by far the most gangster female to step behind the decks in Southern California. Her programming is far superior to the most advanced spy satellites currently in orbit. Her transitions are a perfect cotton/poly blend of heavy and sexy. Her mixes are so clean that you catch a whiff of that new car smell with every tune she drops. She will use her sonic anti mind control lasers to unlock and rewire your inhibition circuits, allowing full dance mobility and raising your fun capacity to unprecedented highs.
