New Little Italy Venue 98 Bottles Hosting Joshua White Dec. 15

98 Bottles is a new lounge and entertainment venue in northern Little Italy that features craft beer, sake, wine, "farm to table food," and entertainment. Owned and operated by long-time San Diego residents, and husband and wife, Steve Anthony Mesaros and Jill Mesaros, along with family friend Chris Hjerling, the venue is hosting local jazz pianist and composer Joshua White on Thursday, December 15.

White was five years old when his family moved to El Cajon in 1991. He began formal piano training at the age of seven, becoming the organist and pianist for the Encanto Southern Baptist Church by age ten. At age twelve, he became the keyboardist for the church’s adult choir.

White fronts an all-original jazz group, the Joshua White Modern Music Project, alongside Anthony Smith (vibraphone), Tommy Holladay (guitar), Jeff Denson (bass), and Jens Kuross (drums).

He also plays with the Trio, alongside Rob Thorsen (bass), and Duncan Moore (drums). In addition, he fronts the Spectrum Trio, with bassist Jeff Denson and drummer Brian McLaughlin. Another group, the Quartet, includes Jason Robinson (soprano/tenor sax), Rob Thorsen (bass), and Duncan Moore (drums).

In September, White earned second place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition on Monday, pocketing a $10,000 prize in the contest whose all-star panel of judges included jazz icons Herbie Hancock, Ellis Marsalis, and Renee Rosnes.

“The Back Room at 98 Bottles is home to a wide array of eclectic entertainment and events,” said Jill Mesaros, CEO and Founder of 98 Bottles. “We built our venue to be a nurturing and creative environment for artists to showcase their wares and develop their craft in front of a live audience. Joshua White is a perfect example of a local musician who honed his skills and has now reached an exciting level of expertise. He embodies the type of talent you can expect to see regularly at 98 Bottles.”
