Last month, Jamie Minotti of the Madero Group told the Reader about his mission to cultivate local and out-of-town electronic music with regular Ocean Beats events.
Tonight’s a great chance to see what that’s all about with an Uptown edition of Ocean Beats at the Ruby Room, where the Madero Group and Sublmnl Sound System (CRMNL and Austin Speed) will be presenting a heavy-hitting line up of bass-centric music.
Topping the bill is San Francisco via Toronto glitch hop/dubstep producer ill.Gates (aka Phat Conductor), who has collaborated with notables such as Datsik, Bassnectar, Ana Sia, Opiuo, T.O.B., Vibesquad, and Mimosa.
Electronic music producers are invited to attend Gates’ 4-hour ill.Methodology Ableton Live workshop at 5:00 p.m. which will conclude with a performance by R/D and CRMNL.
“The ill.Methodology is an artistic development workshop series ill.Gates conducts while touring throughout select cities in the U.S and Canada,” the website reads. “It presents a comprehensive skill set of techniques acquired from his prolific 17 years of experience in electronic music production.”
Tickets are available online.
LAtian R/D performs a pre-produced and live fusion of breaks, electro-hop, and indie rock. Now touring his new ‘Liquid Heart Keeper’ album, R/D has shared bills with the likes of Flying Lotus, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob, Les Claypool, Cocoe Rosie, Caspa, Mala, Beats Antique, Mim0sa, and MartyParty.
Filling out the night will be local rads DJ Pound, Roric (“My whole thing is I like to keep a rock and roll vibe with remixes. I’ve also been moving through glitch hop, future bass, and garage.”), and a dual set from Sublmnl Sound duo Austin Speed & CRMNL.
9:00 - 9:45 Roric
9:45 - 10:30 Dj Pound
10:30 - 11:30 R/D
11:30 - 12:45 ill.Gates
12:45 - 1:45 Austin Speed & CRMNL

If instrumental hip hop and experimental beats are your flavor, check out My Dirty Drum Habits at the Kava Lounge.
(Note: this show has been cancelled, but you should probably watch these videos anyways.)
“This show is my dedication to all you guys,” says promoter Marcel 'Nino Seneris' Knochel, who is currently marooned in Germany, apparently indefinitely. “I won’t be back in SD.”
