There are not a lot of places in San Diego for jazz musicians to play. Recently "re-localized" bassist Benjamin Wanicur is working hard to mitigate that situation.
He's already established a Monday night jam session at the Turquoise Cafe in Pacific Beach, which has been drawing in SD heavyweight musicians and vocalists--now, he's at it again, kicking off a special Late Night Jam Session at 3rd Space, 4610 Park Blvd. in University Heights.
The session will begin around 11:30, and will be hosted by trumpet king Gilbert Castellanos and tenor saxophonist Ian Tordella. Rounding out the band is Wanicur on double bass, Mikan Zlatkovich on piano, and Fernando Gomez on the drums.
With personnel like that, expect other SD jazz luminaries to show.
"Peter McConnell runs 3rd Space, a shared creative space. Everyone from IT professionals to artists use the space during the day for work. There are meet-ups and many other events there. I met Pete at one of those events, and I noticed the piano, and the space [itself]," says Wanicur.
"When I first moved to San Diego, Gilbert was doing an after-hours jam session. Eventually it ended up at Culy Trucking Company, where I often played in the house band. Ultimately Dizzy's sprang up in this same location, before it moved to it's present spot. Those sessions were really fun, because they began at the end of a musician's "workday", around 11:30 or midnight. Lots of good players would come out and sit in, and there was a really friendly, social vibe."
There are other open jam sessions, like the aforementioned Mondays at the Turquoise, Castellanos' long running Wednesday sessions at El Camino Super Cocina in Little Italy, and the early Sunday evening Jazz 88 jam at Busalacchi's Spaghetteria, also in Little Italy. What will distinguish the 3rd Space sessions are the Friday, late night vibe. Wanicur adds:
"What I can say to the people of San Diego is this: If you are out past 11 p.m., and you want to hear some live music that does not involve pop covers, your choices are limited. Come check us out !"
