I went to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion last night for the conclusion of their summer festival.
I was excited to catch this last concert. I had my blanket and set up camp in some grass. There was a good turnout and I thought I was in for a treat.
I was wrong.
I primarily went to hear fellow opera chorister Cherylyn Larson sing. She did a great job and sounded fabulous singing selections from West Side Story and O mio babbino caro.
I left at intermission.
I'm not sure what was going on but the very first piece played by Civic Organist, Carol Williams, was ragged. It was an arrangement of There's No Business Like Show Business. I was willing to consider it a funky arrangement and leave it at that.
When The Ride of the Valkyries was also rhythmically ragged--to the point that the main theme disappeared--it was time to go. It sounded as though Wagner had tourettes.
I hesitate to criticize musicians who are far superior to myself. However, I never feel an obligation to stay at a concert that I'm not enjoying.
I won't say I had a bad time but when I was considering breaking my phone out to play Angry Birds, I decided I might as well take off.
