After realizing I’d forgotten Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata I started going back over other music I’d forgotten.
I recalled that for several years Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 was a favorite of mine.
I was especially obsessed with the middle “romance” movement of the concerto.
This was the music that completed the movie Amadeus as the credits began to role.
Romantic is what this music is. I wouldn’t say it’s sexy, in fact, I can’t think of any Mozart that is sexy.
His music is beautiful, energetic, perhaps ardent but never sensual to my ears. That isn’t really Mozart’s contribution.
In this romance movement we get a microcosm of Mozart’s music in general. It has balance, from, and proportion. The dialogue between the piano and the orchestra is always civil and refined, they aren’t competing or pushing each other but seem to be having a friendly chat about a cherished topic.
