SD Sheriff’s Dept.
Deputies received a report of a train vs. pedestrian collision.
Upon arrival, they found a woman, Laurajean Vos, 35, lying a few yards from a stopped Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train.
Investigation revealed she had come to the area with her husband, Christopher Gutierrez, to memorialize the death of her father, who had died at the same location on March 11, 2007.
Police investigators state Voss was depressed over her father's death.
According to the her husband and witnesses at the scene, Voss was attempting to place a shirt onto the railroad tracks just as the freight train was coming. She then “fell forward into the path of the on-coming train,” according to Sgt. William Dryer of the Sheriff’s Encinitas Station.
It all appeared suspicious; however, on March 5, the county Medical Examiner's Office determined the Voss, possibly out of great grief, committed suicide.
