Fingernail Shavings Clip Suspect

New DNA allows old San Diego cold case to be filed "SOLVED."

Broadway, between F and G Streets, Chula Vista

Homicide in August, 1976; case solved January 10, 2008.

Chula Vista PD

Back in, Anita Marie Carrier, who was either 18 or 20 as reports on her age are conflicting, walked into the Main Gate Bar (no longer existing) in Chula Vista. Just before closing time she walked out with a man, only to turn up early the next morning dead on the grounds of an apartment complex. She had been stabbed 28 (other reports state more than 30) times. For all those years Chula Vista Homicide detectives had a strong suspicion that career criminal Charles Edward Manley, also known as Charles Edward Beard, had murdered the young woman, as the bartender at Main Gate identified him as the man Anita Carrier left with. Detectives, however, could never find the solid and scientific proof, until now.

With the help of the Sheriffs Crime Lab and newly detected DNA evidence, the Chula Vista Police Department's Cold Case Unit has concluded that former Nevada death row inmate Charles Edward Manley was responsible for the murder of Anita Marie Carrier.

Manley was convicted in 1995 in Nevada for the murder of his live-in girlfriend. He died in 2001 from Hepatitis C at age 53; he was awaiting execution on Death Row at Ely State Prison

On January 10, 2008, Chula Vista Cold Case Investigator Bob Conrad received the lab report from the SDSO Crime Lab DNA section. The report, by Criminalist Cathy Jakovich, indicated that DNA material from Carrier's fingernail clippings contained a mixture from Carrier and our suspect, Charles "Beard" Manley. The results indicate it is 11 billion times more likely that this mixture originated from Carrier and Manley than if it originated from Carrier and an unknown individual selected at random.

This information, along with other circumstancing evidence identifying Manley as the likely suspect during the initial investigation, allowed the case to be cleared. Since the suspect, Manley, died on death row in Nevada, this case will be filed as "Cleared Other."
