Police investigators with the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit are investigating a new case as a homicide due to the severe condition of the victim, a 15-year-old female who is on life support at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

It started with a brawl between the girl’s current boyfriend and her ex-boyfriend that escalated into a group fight of ten teenagers at Wabash and Cuperno Lanes, near Temecula Parkway. All are from Great Oak High School.

According to Sgt. Bill DeLuna of the Temecula Police Department, the 15-year-old girl tried to stop the two boys from fighting; during the escalation, a 17-year-old girl punched her, causing the victim to fall to the ground.

The victim, so far unidentified, hit her heard on the curve and sustained her life-threatening injuries.

The neighborhood turned into pandemonium and confusion, with police helicopters and a SWAT team on the scene, yellow tape surrounding the fallen girl, and people who were giving the police difficulty being placed in handcuffs.

A neighbor, who witnessed the fight, tried to keep the girl awake but “she was gasping for air and her eyes kept rolling back,” said the neighbor to the press.

Police and paramedics performed CPR. Once at Rady, the girl was put on life-support.

Temecula Police Chief Jerry Williams states that they must treat this as an actual homicide and that charges will later be filed depending on “what happens to the victim.”

“This was a bunch of kids fighting over petty issues involving a boyfriend and girlfriend and now a girl is in the hospital,” Williams said at a press conference.

Flowers are being left where the girl hit her head. Grief counseling has been offered at Great Oak High, the second time since last year’s double-homicide of twin sisters Narissa and Nikita Williams.
