Border Patrol agents received information about a possible smuggler’s vehicle involved I the transportation of undocumented border crossers from Mexico. Agents from the Field Intelligence Detail responded to the intersection of the Shockey Trcuk Trail and Highway 94 to monitor the situation.
The suspect vehicle left the area and the agents followed it in unmarked vehicles.
The driver of the suspect vehicle drove eastbound on Highway 94 to Church Road, continued northbound to Old Highway 80 to the truck entrance at Golden Acorn Casino.
The driver made a left turn and was confronted by border agents. The agents approached the driver, who was now stopped at the intersection. The driver backed up the vehicle towards Old Highway 80, and stopped quickly. He drove forwards toward one agnet. The agent was in harm’s way so all agents discharged their firearms, according to Sgt. Roy Frank of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect vehicle came to rest in a ravine on the north side of Old Highway 80. The driver and front seat passenger sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital. Four illegal aliens were taken into custody from the back seat of the vehicle. They were not shot.
The incident is being investigated by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Detail, with the assistance of the Border Patrol and the FBI.
