Chula Vista Police were called to the Ritmo Latino Strip Mall after a man was shot during a confrontation with three men.
Witnesses told officers that three men approached the victim, David Renteria, 29, as he was walking out of The Water Store; one fired several rounds from a handgun. Renteria was struck three times in the upper body, with one round hitting an unoccupied sport utility vehicle in the parking lot.
Palomar High School was locked down and children at Harborside Elementary School were kept from leaving for about 45 minutes.
The three suspect are described as Latinos in their mid-20s, wearing black T-shirts, blue jeans and tennis shoes. The gunman was last seen running east toward an Oxford Street apartment complex, which police surrounded and searched with the assistance of the Sheriff’s helicopter.
The shooting is considered gang related.
