4400 Boundary Street, North Park Arrest on October 18, 2007; homicide on March 27, 1994 SDPD 32.757695, -117.126645
Investigator’s from the District Attorney’s Office went to Sacramento on October 18 and arrested Douglas Hughes, 35, for the cold case homicide of Robert Stewart, 13 years ago.
On March 27, 1994, Stewart, 26, was assaulted while visiting a female acquaintance at her apartment, located on the 4400 lock of Boundary Street. For reasons unknown, she attacked him and dragged him out to the street. Stewart was a sailor in the Navy, lived on Iowa Street, and reported missing. On June 24, 1994, his dead body was discovered by a pedestrian near the South Chollas Hills landfill, says Lt. Manny Guaderrama. Stewart appeared to have been killed by “blunt force trauma to the head, likely inflicted by some sort of heavy object,” according to the SDPD.
Homicide units conducted an exhaustive and comprehensive investigation, but the murder went into the cold case files.
New information was developed two years ago by the SDPD Cold Team investigators, the National Criminal Intelligence Service, and the District Attorney’s office. This information has not been revealed to the public. Hughes was also in the Navy at the time and knew Stewart.
Hughes waived extradition. He will be tried here in San Diego.
