15205 State Route 67, Poway November 1, 10:25 a.m. Sheriff’s Dept. 32.986089, -116.975496
A blue Toyota Camry, driven by 72-year-old Mary Peterson, attempted to make an illegal U-Turn from the right shoulder of northbound SR 67 in front of a commercial dump truck that was carrying 40,000 pounds of asphalt from Lakeside to Romona.
The truck was driven by Mickey Jones, 54, of El Cajon. He attempted to brake and swerve left, to avoid the Toyota but collided with the front of it. The Toyota was forced into the guardrail and the dump truck flipped on its side.
The entire load of asphalt was spilled onto the roadway and the cab of the dump truck was crushed. It slid off the highway thirty feet down an embankment.
Witnesses were able to remove Mickey Jones from the wreck and attempted first aid measures, to no avail.
Paramedics pronounced Jones dead at the scene at 11:09 a.m.
Mary Peterson was taken to Palomar Hospital but did not appear injured at the time, according to Corporal Todd Murphy of the Sheriff’s Department.
SR 67 was closed in both directions for three hours while Cal-Trans removed the spilled asphalt.
Authorities report that they are currently examining the circumstances that, because the U-Turn was illegal, will lead to a charge of vehicular and negligent homicide/manslaughter.
