Officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting. On arrival, they found a 25-year-old female, Rikki Watkins, mortally wounded. She died at the scene at 3:11 a.m.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and her sister live at the residence. That night, the two sisters and several friends went out drinking with friends. The group returned to the residence and the victim’s sister and her boyfriend went to bed in the second floor bedroom.
The boyfriend, 20-year-old Andrew Reyna, heard a noise in the hallway and armed himself and went investigating. Reyna saw a figure in the hallway and shot at it. The figure was his girlfriend’s sister, Rikki.
Why he shot her is not known, according to Lt. Kevin Rooney of the SDPD Homicide unit. It is speculated alcohol is a factor.
Reyna is to be arraigned Wednesday, December 19, on the shooting death.
