Night of the Shotgun

No motive established for what appears to be random shootings.

Various addresses in Chula Vista November 23-24, 11:52 p.m. - 12:33 a.m. CVPD

Two murders carried out in Chula Vista, along with an attempted murder that took place just inside the city limits of South San Diego; appear to have been carried out by the same shooter, say detectives with the Chula Vista and San Diego Police Departments.

At this point, however, the detectives have not been able to establish a motive for the bullet spree.

The attempted murder happened on Friday, November 23, at 11:52 p.m. The victim was shot in the stomach with a shotgun blast while sitting at a bus stop at 2340 Palm Avenue in South San Diego.

Approximately six minutes later, at 11:58 p.m., 17-year old Jose Rodriguez, just minutes from his 18th birthday, was dropping off his girlfriend at 424 Woodlawn Avenue when the gunman walked up to Rodriguez and shot him in the head.

On November 24, at 12:33 a.m., a third victim, 26-year old Francisco Miranda, was shot in the head at 3008 Main Stree, in the parking lot of the Over the Border nightclub. He was talking on his cell phone when it happened. The gunman fired from a passing vehicle.

The two victims in Chula Vista were shot in the head at close range with a shotgun and died as a result of their injuries.

Witness's at all three locations provided two vehicle descriptions. One was described as a dark-colored hatchback coupe, possibly a Honda Civic. The other vehicle was described as a late 90's dark green or black Jeep Cherokee with a roof rack.

There is no description of the drivers of the vehicles, but the shooter is described as an African-American, male, late 20's to early 30's, slim build, wearing a black windbreaker or hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a hat worn backwards.

Anyone who has information regarding the above cases is encouraged to call CrimeStoppers, toll free, 24/7 at (888) 580-TIPS, the Chula Vista Police Department at (619)691-5151 or your local law enforcement agency.
