8475 Avenida Anguila, Spring Valley August 26, 4:38 p.m. Sheriff's Dept. 32.696648, -117.015337
Jesse Jose Martinez, 35, had been staying at his girlfriend’s residence at the Sweetwater Condo Complex throughout the day, with her five-year-old child and her and the male’s 17 month-old toddler. When the mother of the children arrived home she immediately noticed that her boyfriend, who she says has a "history of some type of mental problems," was acting in a bizarre manner. In light of his outlandish behavior, she went to a neighbor’s residence for help.
Martinez cut his own throat with a knife and held on to the infant. The mother was able to get the baby away from her bleeding boyfriend. He then held the five year-old, while putting the knife to the child’s throat.
Neighbors intervened and the mother was able to take the second child from him. From that point until the Sheriff deputies arrived, the suspect attacked several other people in the complex, stabbing at least one, who was treated at a local hospital.
Deputies restrained the struggling, knife-wielding, bleeding-from-the-throat Martinez prior to paramedics rendering first aid. Life Flight transported him to Scripps Mercy, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Crime Lab, Homicide Detail and the Lemon Grove Station are investigating this incident.
