Week 4 High Five
Game of the Week
No. 7 Steele Canyon (3-0) at No. 4 Eastlake (3-0) Friday 7 p.m.
In defense of their Division I title, Eastlake is off to a flying start this season. The Titans are averaging 33 points per game and have already rushed for more than 1,000 yards, with Jude Isbell (506 yards, 4 touchdowns) shouldering most of the load. After losing Division I talent last season, Eastlake might be faster this season with the likes of senior two-way burners Jordan Hines and Chris Fletcher.
The Titans, however, will face their toughest in-section challenge of the season so far when Steele Canyon comes to town. After upending Cathedral Catholic in their season opener, the Cougars haven’t slowed down, beating Bonita Vista and Serra. Jake Wragg paces Steele Canyon on the ground, already scoring eight touchdowns this season.
Best of the Rest
Los Alamitos (3-0) at No. 6 Valley Center (3-0) Friday 7 p.m.
Valley Center is the latest San Diego Section team to generate state bowl buzz, appearing atop last week’s Cal-Hi Sports Division III South rankings before a lopsided win over La Jolla. The Jaguars host a Southern Section state bowl contender in Los Alamitos and a good showing would bolster their early hopes. Valley Center’s first three opponents haven’t found a way to stop running back Travis Bernard, who has rushed for 663 yards and 7 touchdowns already this season.
Santa Fe Christian (2-1) at Grossmont (3-0) Friday 7 p.m.
That precipitation coming out of the East County isn’t an early winter storm; it’s Grossmont quarterback Desean Waters, a dual threat that has led the Foothillers to an undefeated start. Grossmont’s defense has also been stout, allowing a total of 14 points in their first three games. Santa Fe Christian swung and missed against a bigger school earlier this season, losing 49-10 at Helix on Sept. 10. But the Eagles always have the discipline to catch big teams off guard with their misdirection offense and have a shot to turn some heads.
Escondido (0-2) at Rancho Bernardo (3-0) Friday 7 p.m.
For the second straight season, Rancho Bernardo has opened the season with three wins. Last year their shot at 4-0 was derailed by Escondido, who handed them a 35-7 defeat. The Broncos have a strong two-headed rushing attack of senior David Jones (331 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Tyler Gomogda (272, 4 TDs). While winless, Escondido has lost its first two games by only five points combined and will be looking end up on the right side of the score against an I-15 rival.
Cathedral Catholic (0-3) at Carlsbad (2-0) Friday 7 p.m.
After losing three games in three seasons, Cathedral Catholic has lost their first three to start this season, falling to ranked Steele Canyon, Torrey Pines and Helix. It won’t get easier for the Dons against Carlsbad, a program that appears energized by their new digs. The Dons have won the last two matchups including a 38-7 win last season.
In the Red Zone
Scripps Ranch (2-0) at Point Loma (2-1) Friday 3 p.m.
