Falcons keep Eagles off the board for third straight shutout
CHULA VISTA – Another game for Torrey Pines, another shutout. The eighth-ranked Falcons pitched their third shutout in a row to start the season, blanking host Olympian 28-0 on Friday night.
“Honestly I don’t even know,” said Torrey Pines linebacker Kevin Cuff. “We’re just flying around every game reading our keys and not allowing any big plays.”
Cuff anchored a Falcons defense that suffocated Olympian (1-1), who scored 36 points in their season opener. Torrey Pines (3-0) intercepted the Eagles three times, forced four punts and forced three turnovers on downs.
“The defensive coaches are putting in a lot of time and effort in creating some excellent gameplans,” said Torrey Pines head coach Scott Ashby. “But our defense plays with a lot of heart and a lot of emotion and as a defensive team that’s what you need.”
Torrey Pines needed their defense to pick up the slack for an offense that was missing starting quarterback John Cabot and played without standout offensive tackle Daniel Murray in the second half. Junior Andrew Perkins filled in for Cabot and led a steady offensive effort that got two rushing scores from Cuff in the first half.
“We have a very very good offensive line, some very talented running backs and our quarterback did a wonderful job in his first varsity start – just did a great job in the huddle and threw the ball well,” Ashby said.
Torrey Pines’ shutout streak was put in serious jeopardy late in the second quarter, when a high snap on a punt gave Olympian the ball on the Falcons’ four-yard line with 11.4 seconds left in the half. After an incomplete pass, the Falcons stuffed Olympian quarterback Corbin Humphery short of the endzone as time ran out and took a 14-0 lead into halftime.
“We were pretty annoyed but there was nothing we could really do,” Cuff said. “I’m just glad that we made a play and got off the field.”
Olympian was still in the game after a scoreless third quarter that featured five punts. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Eagles drove down to the Torrey Pines 26-yard line but came up short on fourth down. The Falcons took the ensuing drive for the game-icing touchdown, a 43-yard run by John Wilson with 3:24 left in the game.
“It took us a long time to get going,” Ashby said. “Olympian is a very very good football team and we just continued to keep working.”
After an interception on the ensuing Olympian possession, Torrey Pines running back Andrew Fargo punctuated the Falcons’ win with an 11-yard touchdown run. With the win, Torrey Pines is 3-0 for the first time since 2006.
“We had four or five starters coming back that were a pretty key nucleus but never would I have guessed that we would have three shutouts in a row,” Cuff said.
Through three games, Torrey Pines has not allowed an opponent to score. The Falcons are the only team in the San Diego Section with no points allowed.
“Last year we had a really good defense, but on third down we just couldn’t get off the field,” Cuff said. “This year we’re just getting off the field and we’re making plays.”
The Falcons streak will continue for at least another week, as they have a bye before hosting Carlsbad in their home opener on Oct. 1.
“Carlsbad is going to be tough in two weeks, but we’re going to work hard,” Cuff said.
Olympian will look to bounce back next Friday against fellow South Bay foe Bonita Vista (0-3) at Southwestern College. The Eagles didn’t lose a regular season game last year.
