Week 3 High Five
Game of the Week
No. 8 Torrey Pines (2-0) at Olympian (1-0) Friday 7 p.m.
Torrey Pines was a popular preseason pick, and their statement win at Cathedral Catholic last week justified the hype. The Falcons defense has been dominant so far, pitching shutouts in their first two games. Torrey Pines makes the 40-minute trip to the South Bay to face Olympian, who won at Granite Hills in their opener last week and finished 11-1 last season. Both teams like to keep it on the ground – Torrey Pines averages 219 rushing yards per game led by backs John Wilson and Andrew Fargo and Olympian had three 100-yard rushers as part of 445 yards rushing against Granite Hills. The Eagles are a program on the rise, but will they be able to fly against Torrey Pines? The Falcons are playing their third straight road game to start the season.
Best of the Rest
No. 9 Mira Mesa (1-1) vs. No. 4 Oceanside (1-1) Friday 7 p.m. at El Camino High
Fresh off a win at nationally-ranked Temecula Chaparral, this was supposed to be Oceanside’s first home game in their new stadium. With the stadium not yet finished, Oceanside will host the game at El Camino. Getting their first in-section win won’t be easy against Mira Mesa, who might consider North County cozy, playing in their third straight game up north. Neither the Pirates nor Marauders are taking the preseason lightly and this should be a very even game. Oceanside has won the last two meetings between these teams.
Bishop’s (1-0) at La Jolla Country Day (1-1) Thursday 7 p.m.
The high school football spotlight will shine on La Jolla on Thursday, when the Knights and Torreys meet in the small school rivalry. If history is any indication, this should be a close one – each of the last two games have been decided by a point, with Bishop’s winning 14-13 last year.
Castle Park (2-0) at Grossmont (2-0) Friday 7 p.m.
Two of the section’s less likely unbeatens meet for a chance to go 3-0. Both Castle Park (average victory margin of 22 points) and Grossmont (32 points) have gone about their perfection rather easily. Revenge will be on the minds of the host Trojans, who lost 42-0 at Grossmont last season.
Fallbrook (1-0) at Rancho Bernardo (2-0) Friday 7 p.m.
This game will be a battle of contrasting offenses. Rancho Bernardo has rushed for an average of 268 yards in their first two games, led by back David Jones’ 240 yards and three touchdowns. By contrast, Fallbrook had a balanced attack in their opener against Clairemont, throwing for 221 yards and rushing for 184. These two teams met in the first round of last year’s Division I playoffs, with the Warriors upsetting the Broncos 7-6.
