Point Loma defensive back Josh Sakover (2) celebrates a first-quarter touchdown with teammates
SAN CARLOS – With an opening week bye, Patrick Henry waited eight extra days to start their 2010 season. Point Loma didn’t exactly welcome the Patriots to the party, however, blanking the hosts 54-0 on Saturday night.
After Patrick Henry punted on the game’s first possession, Point Loma (2-0) moved 59 yards in less than a minute to make it 7-0. The drive was capped by an Aaron Watkins 4-yard touchdown run.
On the very next play from scrimmage, the Pointers’ defense found the endzone when defensive back Josh Sakover picked off a James McCormick pass and took it 35 yards to paydirt. Later in the first quarter, Point Loma turned a Patrick Henry fumble into points when quarterback Sean McKaveney found receiver Matt Magers for a 22-yard score.
Up 21-0 headed into the second quarter, Point Loma didn’t let up on Patrick Henry (0-1). The Pointers scored three touchdowns in the second quarter – two rushing touchdowns and a Christian Heyward fumble return – and had a commanding 41-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Point Loma slowed down but kept Patrick Henry off of the board. The Pointers scored a pair of touchdowns to stay undefeated and round out the lopsided victory.
Patrick Henry will look to pick up its first win of the season next Thursday at home against Hoover (1-1). Point Loma plays at El Capitan (0-2) next Friday.
