Mission Bay beats Hoover for first win of season

Mission Bay running back Chris Byrd runs outside with Hoover linebacker Corey Mims running him down

SAN DIEGO – After winning all their games last season, it took Mission Bay nine weeks to pick up their first win in 2010. The Buccaneers got on the board with a 23-13 win at Hoover on Friday afternoon.

Following a Hoover punt to open the game, Mission Bay (1-7, 1-2 Western) drove 63 yards for the game’s first score. Buccaneers quarterback Nate Long hit receiver Jaquan Madyun for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 7-0 just more than four minutes into the game.

Both teams made their fair share of mistakes in a first half filled with turnovers and penalties. Mission Bay added to their lead in the second quarter with three field goals during a nine-minute stretch in which Hoover’s offense didn’t run a single play.

With Hoover (3-4-1, 0-3) punting deep in their own territory early in the second quarter, Cardinals Byreese Taylor attempted to run for the first down but was stopped short. Taking over at the Hoover 21-yard line, Mission Bay turned the favorable field position into a Jorge Duarte 32-yard field goal.

Mission Bay got the ball right back in Hoover territory by recovering onside kick on the ensuing play. That drive ended with a 27-yard field goal by Duarte to give the Bucs a 13-point lead.

On the next kickoff, Hoover lost the ball at midfield and Mission Bay capitalized once again. The Buccaneers methodically moved down the field, with Duarte connecting on his third field goal of the quarter with 22 seconds left to give Mission Bay a 16-0 lead at halftime.

Hoover showed signs of life early in the second half, recovering a Mission Bay fumble on the opening drive of the third quarter. Needing only eight yards for a score, the Cardinals got on the board on a sneak by quarterback Cheng Moua, making the score 16-6.

The two teams traded touchdowns on their next drives, but after Moua connected with Bobby Williams on a 58-yard scoring strike midway through the third quarter, neither team would score again. Mission Bay’s 23-13 victory was their first since capturing the Division IV title last season.

Since winning three of their first four games this season, Hoover has not tasted victory. The Cardinals have handed three straight opponents their first win of the season.
