Highlanders dominate Foothillers in battle of unbeatens
LA MESA – Hosting fellow unbeaten Grossmont on Friday night, No. 2 Helix did not appear ready to part with their perfect record. The Highlanders handed the No. 9 Foothillers a lopsided 41-0 defeat behind an explosive offensive and stingy defense.
“It was two undefeated teams and we expected a battle, said Helix quarterback Brandon Lewis. “It was a battle.”
Ahead 6-0 after the first quarter, Helix’s offense started clicking in the second quarter. Midway through the quarter, Lewis threw for two touchdowns in less than a minute – a 10-yard pass to receiver Jimmy Pruitt and a four-yard pass to tight end Sam Mererdith following a Grossmont fumble.
“They knew the run was coming, so we just had to throw the ball,” Lewis said. “We start off with the run so we can get a feel of what’s going on then we just come out with the pass. We chip away, chip away, chip away, then we try to go deep.”
Later in the quarter Helix’s defense effectively delivered the knockout blow in the clash of the unbeatens. Highlanders’ linebacker Gary Thompson intercepted a tipped Desean Waters pass and took it 40 yards for touchdown to give Helix (7-0, 2-0 Grossmont Hills) a 27-0 lead they would take into halftime.
“It kind of caught me off guard, Thompson said. “Our safety tipped it and I thought I was going to get it, so I stuck my hand out, tipped it to myself, caught it and ran it in.”
Helix ended any chance of a Grossmont (6-1, 1-1) comeback right away in the second half, forcing a Foothillers’ three and out and then scoring again to take a commanding 34-point lead. The Highlanders put up the game’s final score before the third quarter ended, a 58-yard dash by Michael Adkins.
“This was the game for us,” Lewis said. “It was trash talking all week by them. We didn’t respond and that was the good thing about it. We show our action on the field.”
While the Helix’s offense rolled, their defense suffocated Grossmont’s spread attack. The Highlanders contained Waters and shut out a Foothillers team that came in averaging 32 points per game.
“It was just the defense doing our assignments, reading the offensive line, getting off and making plays,” Thomspson said.
In their third shutout of the season, Helix forced two Grossmont turnovers and weren’t flustered by the Foothillers’ misdirection plays. The Highlanders have allowed only 31 points total this season – less than five points per game.
“We feed off each other’s energy,” Thompson said. “If we mess up on a play we just come back, brush it off and do it again on the next play.”
With the win, Helix retains the Musket trophy for another season. Friday night’s game was the 55th meeting between the two longtime rivals.
