University City shocks Morse to extend surprising streak

University City running back Parris Jordan carries the ball against Morse

UNIVERSITY CITY – After ending a 22-game losing streak earlier in the month, University City is starting a new streak. The Centurions stunned Morse 11-8 on Friday afternoon for their third win in a row.

“It’s probably the biggest win we’ve had here in a long time,” said University City head coach John Hutsel. “They’ve just come so far and there have been so many learning situations.”

In a defensive struggle, University City running back Parris Jordan scored the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard run with 8:18 left. The subsequent two-point conversion from quarterback Logan Stewart to fullback Kendrick Morris put the Centurions up 11-8.

“It wasn’t perfect but we’ll get there,” Hutsel said.

Morse turned the ball over on downs on their next possession. The Tigers got the ball back in their own territory with 20 seconds left but the University City defense was able to preserve the victory.

“You can keep telling them they’re better, but unless they see it on the scoreboard it’s hard. It’s almost impossible for kids to understand that,” Hutsel said. “It basically comes down to them. Every week they have gotten better.”

On the game’s opening drive, University City (3-3, 2-0 Central) methodically moved the ball down the field, scoring first on a Travis Nicklaw 37-yard field goal. Morse (5-3, 2-1) took the lead back in the second quarter on a James Roberts 25-yard scoring run and two-point conversion to give the Tigers an 8-3 lead at the half.

With a first-and-goal at the one-yard line, it looked like Morse would extend their five-point lead late in the third quarter. But University City’s defense stiffened and kept the Tigers out of the endzone with a goal line stand.

“This is what we do. We run the ball hard, we don’t let anybody get us down and we just keep going,” Jordan said.

Three possessions later, University City scored the game-winning touchdown on a 60-yard drive. The Centurions are now two-for-two to start Central League play.

“It means a whole lot – 2-0 in league, we’re in first place now and it’s good,” Jordan said. “UC is for real.”

University City snapped their 22-game losing streak against Southwest on Oct. 2. The streak dated back to 2008 and included a winless season in 2009 and an 0-3 start this season.

“It has been a hard struggle the last year and a half,” Hutsel said. “The kids have worked so hard to change who they are and who people believe they are in the community.”

Now, the Centurions find themselves tied for first place in league with Coronado with four games left. Not that they are getting too carried away, though.

“The most important game is going to be the next game and that’s the biggest thing right now with us – to not get ahead of ourselves and stay where we’re at,” Hutsel said.
