POINT LOMA – Facing the team that eliminated them last year’s Division III playoffs, No. 8 Steele Canyon was out for revenge against Point Loma on Friday afternoon. The Cougars got some payback with a decisive 35-8 victory over the Pointers.
The first score of the game came five minutes in courtesy of Steele Canyon’s special teams. With Point Loma (3-2) punting from inside their 5-yard line, Cougars defensive back Jordan Gofigan came in untouched, blocked the punt and recovered it in the endzone.
That score aside, the first quarter was a field position battle that Steele Canyon (4-1) was able to control. Early in the second, the Cougars took a drive that started at midfield for a score – an 8-yard pass from Brad Boehmke to Jake Wragg – to take a two-score lead.
The Cougars added to their lead with a safety midway through the second quarter. Pressured in the endzone, Point Loma quarterback Thomas Mize threw an incomplete pass that the referees judged to be intentional grounding. Steele Canyon took that 16-0 lead into halftime.
While Point Loma’s offense struggled for most of the game without injured starting quarterback Sean McKaveney, the Pointers finally broke through in third quarter. Mize found receiver Matt Magers for a 37-yard touchdown and the two connected on the subsequent two-point conversion to make it a one-score game.
After the Point Loma score, however, Steele Canyon’s offense hit its stride. The Cougars scored on a pair of Wragg runs to take a 21-point lead into the fourth quarter on their way to a 35-8 win.
The win exacted some recent and not so recent revenge for Steele Canyon. Point Loma beat the Cougars in the Division III semifinals twice in the last four seasons – 30-26 last season and 28-21 in 2006 – to deny them a shot at Qualcomm Stadium.
Steele Canyon’s move to Division II before the season means there won’t be a playoff rematch in 2010. Both teams are off next week before starting league play on Oct. 15.
