Quarterfinals High Five
All games Friday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
Game of the Week
(6) Rancho Bernardo (9-2) at (3) Mission Hills (8-2) (Division II)
The depth of the Division II bracket is showcased in this quarterfinal, with both Mission Hills and Rancho Bernardo possessing legitimate section title aspirations. The Grizzlies took the regular season meeting between the two teams by three points, and this playoff rematch promises to be just as close. Moving the ball won’t be a problem for either team – Mission Hills with quarterback Hunter Moore calling the shots and Rancho Bernardo with the dual-headed rushing attack of Tyler Gomogda and David Jones. The difference in this one may come on the defensive side, where the Broncos are allowing 10 points per game and 13 total in their last three comments and the Grizzlies are allowing an average of 28 per contest. Which way will this second North County shootout go?
Best of the Rest
(10) Point Loma (8-3) at (2) Mount Miguel (8-1-1) (Division III)
No matter where they have in the bracket the past couple years, Point Loma always seems to make a playoff run to Qualcomm Stadium. After winning at Mar Vista in the first round, the Pointers take on a Mount Miguel team that has gone about their business quietly since losing to Helix in the middle of the season. Both teams have rosters full of athletes, setting the stage for a physical, back-and-forth encounter.
(5) Grossmont (9-2) at (4) Mira Mesa (5-5) (Division I)
Of the teams outside the top four, no team had a bigger gripe than Grossmont headed into the playoffs. The Foothillers were passed in favor of Mira Mesa because of strength of schedule, despite having three more wins than the Marauders. After beating San Diego in the first round, Grossmont now gets a shot to prove they are better than Mira Mesa in a game that will be filled with emotion. With both blue and gold outfits allowing an average of less than 15 points per game, this should be a close, low-scoring affair.
(6) La Jolla Country Day (8-3) at (3) Francis Parker (4-6) (Division V)
Injuries have hampered two-time defending section champion Francis Parker this season, and the Lancers limped into the playoffs with four straight losses. A first round bye gave Francis Parker a chance to heal, but they will be given a run right away against La Jolla Country Day. The Torreys are averaging 38 points per game in their last six games with an offense led by quarterback Ruben Pena. Country Day won’t need any additional motivation against Parker, who knocked them out of last year’s playoffs.
(5) Coronado (9-2) vs (4) Santa Fe Christian (6-4) at La Costa Canyon High (Division IV)
Coronado has only lost two games this season, but one of their losses came at the hands of Santa Fe Christian. Since losing to the Eagles on Sept. 17, the Islanders have won eight straight – including a 47-14 win over Escondido Charter in the first round. This one will feature a lot of running, with quarterbacks Connor Moore (Santa Fe Christian) and Austin Denson (Coronado) leading their teams’ rushing attacks.
