Mustangs roll to decisive first round win over Wildcats
OCEANSIDE – Otay Ranch rolled into the Division I playoffs, and in the first round the Mustangs didn’t show any signs of letting up. The 9-seed Mustangs cruised to a 44-12 win at 8-seed El Camino on Friday night for their third win in a row.
“I thought it was going to be a really close game, but we just came out and played strong,” said Otay Ranch quarterback Marcus Hernandez. “They played their best, we played our best and we came out on top.”
Hernandez threw for three touchdown passes at the helm of a Mustang quick set attack that moved the ball with ease against El Camino (5-6). Trailing late in the first quarter after Josef Farrick 63-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ena, the Mustangs found the endzone on three consecutive drives to take a 24-6 lead into halftime.
“We run quick, quick, quick, I make my reads and that’s what got them. They got caught off guard,” Hernandez said.
While the Mustangs came out firing, El Camino never really got it going. Coming off their biggest win of the season over rival Oceanside, the Wildcats started off flat and couldn’t close the 18-point gap after halftime.
“The bottom line is that we didn’t show up tonight,” said El Camino head coach Pulu Poumele. “I could say we were emotionally drained after playing Oceanside but this is a playoff situation and you have to be able to show up and play. We just didn’t have it tonight.”
Otay Ranch (7-4) scored three touchdowns in the second half on their way to a decisive victory. Mustangs running Ernie Hicks punctuated the lopsided victory with a nine-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
“Our key was to practice hard all week,” Hernandez said. “My O-line gave me a lot of time to pass, my wide receivers caught the ball.”
During their current winning streak, Otay Ranch has averaged 54 points per game. The Mustangs made big plays on the ground and through the air against El Camino.
“They played really well and we made a lot of mistakes,” Poumele said. “We gave up some big plays and we just weren’t able to get the job done.”
Otay Ranch advances to face top-seed Eastlake (10-0) next Friday in the Division I quarterfinals. The Titans beat the Mustangs 40-27 in Metro Mesa League play on Oct. 15.
“We’ll come out with the win this time,” Hernandez said.
