UNIVERSITY CITY – Coronado wasn’t perfect in their win over University City on Friday afternoon, but their victory resulted in perfection. The Islanders beat the host Centurions 20-16 to cap an undefeated Central League campaign.
“We’ve been talking about this since our freshman year – we’re taking league and we want our rings,” said Coronado running back/defensive back Jeff Bona. “We’ve worked hard all season. They were great games and we pulled them out.”
With University City driving with less than a minute left to play, Bona sealed the victory by intercepting Centurions quarterback Logan Stewart. Bona also starred on offense with a pair of touchdowns in the contest – one rushing and one receiving.
Coronado (8-2, 6-0 Central) scored the first 13 points of the game and led 13-3 at halftime. In the red zone late in the second quarter, Bona fumbled at the University City 2-yard line to keep the Islanders from extending their lead.
“It got me discouraged,” Bona said. “I went into halftime and I just thought we need to come out and we need to put up some points and we did it and held on.”
Both teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter, and Coronado had a comfortable 20-10 headed into the fourth. Midway through the fourth quarter, University City (4-6, 3-3) made it a one score game with a touchdown pass on the first play following a Travis Giffen interception.
“We knew that this game would be a tough game because they obviously wanted to win and go into the playoffs with a win,” said Coronado linebacker Jordan Jacobs. “We wanted to win league and we wanted it more than them.”
With the win, Coronado takes home their first league title since 2006. The Islanders will host a first round game in the Division IV playoffs and have a chance shot at a top-four seed.
“We’re prepared for the playoffs. We’re going to have to step up even more than this,” Jacobs said. “All these games have just led us up. Everything just keeps building and building and building and we’re getting up to the very top. We’re going to be there.”
