St. Augustine quarterback Evan Crower
Bracket Breakdown: Division III
The Field
(1) St. Augustine (8-2)
(8) Montgomery (7-3) vs (9) San Marcos (4-6)
(5) Lincoln (4-6) vs (12) Castle Park (6-4)
(4) Ramona (5-5)
(3) Cathedral Catholic (5-5)
(6) El Centro Southwest (7-3) vs (11) El Capitan (5-4-1)
(7) Mar Vista (7-3) vs (10) Point Loma (7-3)
(2) Mount Miguel (8-1-1)
First Round Nov. 19 7 p.m. (top four seeds receive byes)
Quarterfinals Nov. 26 7 p.m.
Semifinals Dec. 2 7 p.m.
Finals Dec. 6 1 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium
Favorite (2) Mount Miguel
Though not the top seed, Mount Miguel (8-1-1) finished as co-champs of the Grossmont Valley League with their only loss coming to No. 1 Helix. The Matadors have the size and speed to go all the way and their defense has allowed less than 10 points per game in their last four.
Sleeper (8) Montgomery
Montogomery has one of the highest scoring offenses in the section and could be a headache for top seed St. Augustine if they win against San Marcos in the first round. The Aztecs, led by running back Diego Rodriguez, should not be taken lightly.
First Round Upset (10) Point Loma over (7) Mar Vista
Point Loma (7-3) has to be wondering why they are traveling in the first round after winning four of their last five finishing second in the Western League. The Pointers have some of the best talent in the section and will be looking to unleash it on Mar Vista, champs of the Metro South Bay League.
Star Watch QB Evan Crower, St. Augustine, Sr.
A prototype pro-style quarterback, Crower has thrown for 1,836 yards and 25 touchdowns this season to lead St. Augustine (8-2). If a bye week can’t heal injuries in the Saints’ backfield, Crower will shoulder the offensive load in the postseason.
Potential Matchup to See Finals – (1) St. Augustine vs (3) Cathedral Catholic
The Holy Bowl has played out in the regular season and playoffs each of the past two seasons, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Saints and Dons found their way to each other from opposite sides of the bracket. If they both make it to Qualcomm Stadium, this would be a classic encounter.
