Game of the Week
Cathedral Catholic (5-4, 4-0 Eastern) vs St. Augustine (7-2, 3-1) Friday 7 p.m. at Mesa College
The winner of this edition Holy Bowl will make a big impression heading into the Division III playoffs. Cathedral Catholic lost four of their first five games of the season to teams with one loss combined and has since won four straight. The three-time defending section champ Dons appear to be hitting their stride at the right time and a win headed into the postseason would certainly make Cathedral Catholic a scary playoff opponent. St. Augustine has good overall record, but after picking up their first marquee win of the season last week against Mira Mesa, Evan Crower and Co. will still be looking to prove that they are a true contender. Oh yeah and there’s that whole rivalry thing, too.
Best of the Rest
No. 7 Steele Canyon (8-1, 4-0 Grossmont Hills) at No. 1 Helix (9-0, 4-0) Friday 7 p.m.
It seems like every other week Helix is playing in a big game, and so far the Highlanders have passed every test. But things won’t get any easier against Steele Canyon, whose only loss this season came to undefeated Eastlake. Helix’s defense comes in allowing only five points per game, while Steele Canyon is allowing 10 points per game. Both teams have playmakers and this should be a fast, physical game to decide the Grossmont Hills crown.
No. 9 La Costa Canyon (5-4) at No. 4 Torrey Pines (9-0) Friday 7 p.m.
With a league title under their belt, Torrey Pines now takes aim at rival La Costa Canyon. The Mavericks were forced to forfeit their win against Chula Vista because of an ineligible player earlier this week, but that doesn’t take any luster away from this contest. Torrey Pines’ success this season has been a result of controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball; can La Costa Canyon slow them down?
Rancho Bernardo (7-2, 2-1 Palomar) at Poway (6-3, 2-1) Friday 7 p.m.
Even though Torrey Pines already wrapped up the Palomar League, it won’t be hard to get neighbors Rancho Bernardo and Poway to play each other. Expect a physical, run-heavy game that should come down to the wire. The home team has won each of the last two meetings.
Mira Mesa (4-5, 2-2 Eastern) at Scripps Ranch (5-3-1, 2-2) Friday 6:30 p.m.
Two teams that have been up and down in Eastern League play have had the same results – both beating Patrick Henry and Lincoln and both losing to Cathedral Catholic and St. Augustine. Three miles separate these schools – who will win the rivalry game?
In the Red Zone
Morse (6-4, 3-2 Central) at Kearny (4-5, 4-1) Friday 2:30 p.m.
