Game of the Week
No. 1 Oceanside vs. Anaheim Servite Thursday 7 p.m. at Orange Coast College
Football fans get a treat one day early in this year’s only regular season matchup between teams that appeared in the state bowls last season. The defending Division I and II state champions face off in Orange County in a battle for Southern California supremacy in the Red Zone Game of the Week. The young Pirates will be thrown into the fire starting the season against the Friars and Temecula Chaparral, putting their 39-game unbeaten streak on the line on Thursday night. Can the Pirates replace the talent they lost from last season? Their opener against a team ranked third in the Southern Section by MaxPreps will give a pretty good indication.
Best of the Rest
No. 7 Mira Mesa at No. 3 Vista Friday 7 p.m.
A pair of perennial contenders squares off in the Red Zone pick on Friday night. Last year’s Division I runner-up Vista appears ready to contend in 2010 and they will be tested in their opener against Mira Mesa, who is usually flush with talent. The Panthers won last year’s meeting by 28 but lost the three previous meetings between the teams.
Valhalla at No. 9 Mission Bay Friday 4 p.m.
Mission Bay begins their Division IV title defense in the Red Zone matinee against Valhalla in a matchup of two offenses replacing marquee players – Dillon Baxter for the Bucs and Pete Thomas for the Norsemen. Both teams will be looking to prove themselves early.
No. 5 La Costa Canyon at Chula Vista Friday 7 p.m.
La Costa Canyon appeared on their way to a second-straight Division I title before being derailed in the semifinals. The Mavericks have a new coach – former Palomar assistant Sean Sovacool – and will be looking to get back to the top playing in Division II this season. Chula Vista will be tested early against one of the elite programs in North County.
St. Augustine at Carlsbad Friday 7 p.m.
Carlsbad breaks in their new stadium to start the season, playing their first home game since 2007 before what should be an electric atmosphere. If the Lancers need any additional motivation, they lost to the Saints 15-14 in last year’s season opener.
