Game of the Week
Rancho Bernardo (3-0) at Escondido (3-0) Friday 7 p.m.
The only matchup of unbeatens this week features two teams with something to prove. Last year’s Division I runner-up Escondido has to prove it can beat a quality opponent, as its first three wins have come over teams with a combined 2-9 record. Meanwhile Rancho Bernardo, the Palomar League’s lone unbeaten, can prove they are for real with a win over a quality opponent. The Broncos have trailed in two of their three wins, including last week against Mt. Carmel when they trailed 14-6 at halftime but went on to win 21-14. Can Rancho Bernardo stop Ricky Seale? The Escondido running back has rushed for 596 yards and 12 touchdowns in the Cougars’ first three games. These two have split their last two meetings, with the Cougars winning 42-10 in 2008.
Best of the Rest
Orange Glen (4-0) at Westview (2-1) Friday 7 p.m.
Orange Glen has been the most surprising unbeaten of the early season, winning their first four games after finishing a combined 3-16 the past two seasons. Running back Dana Walker, who is averaging 105 yards per game and has seven touchdowns, leads the Patriots ground game. Orange Glen can also throw, and quarterback Miles Godfrey has thrown for 546 yards and five touchdowns. Westview has had two weeks to think about their first loss of the season, a 47-21 loss against Carlsbad. If the Wolverines can’t get back on track in this one it will be much tougher to do so in the following weeks, when they play at Valley Center and Oceanside. Westview has won the last two meetings between these two teams by a combined score of 85-34.
Mission Bay (3-0) at Hilltop (3-1) Friday 7 p.m.
This one looked like it would be a matchup of undefeated teams until Hilltop fell last week in a blowout to Patrick Henry. Still, the Lancers are much better than a season ago, when they finished 1-9. Mission Bay is off to a hot start and quarterback Dillon Baxter is the reason why. Working mainly out of the shotgun, the USC commit has already rushed for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, and averages 92 yards passing and one passing touchdown per game. Hilltop’s perfect start came to a resounding thud last week with a 31-point loss to Patrick Henry at home. Lancers quarterback Omar Hernandez averages 177 yards passing and 90 yards rushing per game. Look for a lot of points in this one.
Rancho Buena Vista (1-1-1) at La Costa Canyon (4-0) Friday 7 p.m.
Can any of La Costa Canyon’s preseason opponents slow them down? The Mavericks have won the first four games by an average of 22 points. And while all the buzz in the offseason was about La Costa Canyon receiver Kenny Stills, it has been the ground game getting it done. In last week’s win over Santa Margarita, Seth Hansen ran for three touchdowns. With a tie, a win, and a loss, Rancho Buena Vista has done it all this season. The Longhorns are bouncing back from a 1-9 season and could be gaining momentum coming off a win over San Pasqual. They will be looking to erase the memory of a 47-3 loss to La Costa Canyon last season.
Central Union (3-1) at Granite Hills (2-1) Friday 7 p.m.
After winning only one game last year, Granite Hills is off to a 2-1 start, with their only loss coming at undefeated Olympian. The Eagles are averaging 31 points per game and will look to represent San Diego against one of the better section teams from outside of the area, Central Union. The Spartans’ only loss came to undefeated Coachella Valley and they are putting up 40 points per game so far. Central Union is 1-0 against San Diego teams this year after beating Santana 37-29 last week.
