Game of the Week: Cathedral Catholic at Helix

Dons make statement with blowout of Highlanders

Despite entering this season as two-time defending Division III champs, Cathedral Catholic feels they have been disrespected. After Friday night’s dominating 41-19 win at Helix, it is hard not to give the Dons their due.

“We felt we haven’t really gotten much respect from schools around the county and we just wanted to prove to everyone out there that we could beat one of the elite teams in the county,” said Cathedral Catholic quarterback Max Brewer, “and not only beat them but beat them badly.”

The Dons took the game’s opening kickoff and drove 65 yards to open the scoring. Jonny Martin capped off the drive with a 47-yard touchdown run on fourth down.

“Everyone questioned us because we lost Tyler Gaffney and basically our whole offensive backfield,” Brewer said. “I think we’re proving that we have just as much power as they did and we’re a force to be reckoned with.”

In the second quarter, the Dons ran away with the game. While Cathedral Catholic’s defense shut down Helix, their offense scored on consecutive drives to go ahead 21-0 with 2:00 to play in the half. Following an interception from defensive back Eric Sapp, the Dons scored 21 seconds later when Brewer hit receiver Chance Early to make it a 28-point game.

“We have so many weapons – wide receivers, running backs,” Brewer said. “They just make it a lot easier on me.”

Helix scored before halftime when quarterback Jake Reed hit receiver 1 for a touchdown with 20 seconds left. But Cathedral Catholic went into the locker rooms ahead 28-7 and in complete control of the game.

“That’s their thing, is they like to get fired up,” said Dons linebacker Jordan Lance. “So we said we’re not going to get scared by them getting fired up, let’s take it to another level.”

Cathedral Catholic made it 34-7 late in the third quarter when Martin scored from eight yards out; Martin finished with 234 yards. That touchdown would be more than enough, as Helix wouldn’t get closer than three scores for the rest of the game.

“We thought this was going to be the biggest game on our schedule and it still might be,” Lance said. “We practiced hard every single day like it was going to be the hardest game on our schedule. We do that every single game.”
