Knights beat rival Torreys by one
The Bishop’s School and La Jolla Country Day are only six miles apart. On Friday afternoon at La Jolla High, they played even closer than that. The Knights stuffed a Torreys two-point conversion in the final minutes and held on to win 14-13.
“It means a lot to our guys. They played hard; they played the way we wanted them to, hard-nosed and fighting until the end,” said Bishop’s head coach Joel Allen. “That’s the way these games are won – usually in the trenches.”
Bishop’s dominated the line of scrimmage in the even affair, forcing La Jolla Country Day to nearly completely abandon their running game. Even so, the Torreys drove 63 yards in the fourth quarter to make it a one-point game when QB Derek Hatfield hit tight end Mical Bailey for a 17-yard touchdown.
After the touchdown, the Knights were called for a personal foul, which put the ball at the one-yard line for the conversion. The Torreys then elected to go for two and running back Montell Allen was stuffed by a host of Bishop’s defenders, stopped inches short of the goal line.
“We were a yard out, said La Jolla Country Day head coach Jeff Hutzler. “We gave it to our best player, went to an imbalanced line and thought we could punch it in. I thought we did punch it in quite honestly but that’s not the way the ref saw it.”
After Bishop’s recovered the ensuing onside kick, they gave the ball to Micah Seau. Seau ran for a pair of first downs to ice the game.
“Micah basically just took the game and said I’m going to get these few first downs we need at the end along with playing his heart out on defense,” Allen said.
The Knights played most of the game without starting quarterback Joey Moreno, who was out after injuring his ankle in the first quarter. The offense was simplified for his replacement, freshman Michael Hinkley, but Hinkley performed well in his first varsity appearance.
“We basically had to find our what he had been running on JV and go with that,” Allen said. “That’s what happens when you’re at a small school and you don’t have a ton of options.”
Hinkley didn’t seem fazed by the rivalry.
“He did a great job. He didn’t fumble one snap,” Allen said. “To come in as a freshman and do something like that, that tells a lot about who he is and his character.”
Bishop’s (2-0) plays at Mar Vista next week. La Jolla Country Day (2-1) is idle next week and returns to action Oct. 2 at home against Mountain Empire.
