Three games in the Red Zone this week
Game of the Week
No. 6 Cathedral Catholic (2-0) at No. 2 Helix (2-0) Fri. 7 p.m.
The first matchup this season between teams that made it to Qualcomm in 2008 is one of the best games in the early season. The Dons take their 23-game winning streak to La Mesa, where their streak will no doubt be in jeopardy against the Highlanders. Cathedral Catholic has been convincing in their first two games outscoring their Steele Canyon and Torrey Pines by a combined 51-13. Helix has averaged 33 points in their two wins, but have not been as dominant, only winning by an average of six points. Dons running back Jonny Martin has rushed for six touchdowns this season and Helix quarterback Jake Reed ran for four touchdowns in the Highlanders win over Mira Mesa last week. Both offenses are potent, but can Helix’s defense do enough to stop Cathedral?
In the Red Zone
Mission Bay (2-0) at No. 9 Francis Parker (2-0) Thurs. 6 p.m.
This Thursday matchup features two of the best athletes in the section – Mission Bay’s Dillon Baxter and Francis Parker’s Deon Randall. Both Baxter and Randall play quarterback and defensive back and are the unquestioned leaders of their respective teams. Both teams are coming off of wins over out-of-section teams – the Bucs beat Paloma Valley 38-15 at home while the Lancers ended San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s 44-game winning streak. This game should be a shootout between teams that could both make deep runs into the playoffs.
Best of the Rest
Mission Hills (2-0) at No. 7 Eastlake (0-0-2) Fri. 7 p.m.
Eastlake has kissed their sister two weeks in a row and getting a win will not be any easier when they host Mission Hills, who notched perhaps the section’s most impressive win this season in their season opener against Tesoro. The Titans have a potent offense with speedsters Tony Jefferson, Daniel Diaz and Chris Fletcher leading their ground attack and will put up points, but can they close out a game? In their first two games, Eastlake has led late before conceding the tying score. The Grizzlies face their toughest in-section test when they make the trip to the South Bay. In last year’s meeting, Mission Hills won 21-7.
Chula Vista (2-0) at No. 3 La Costa Canyon (2-0) Fri. 7 p.m.
Chula Vista is making its first of two consecutive trips to North County to take on the defending Division I champions. A win over the Mavericks would go a long way to establishing the Spartans as a contender, but that is easier said than done. La Costa Canyon has not blinked in the first two weeks of their title defense, scoring 84 points in their first two games. Weston Manor and Seth Hansen lead the Mavericks’ ground attack. On offense, Chula Vista is led 6’5” quarterback Victor Perez, who has thrown for 316 yards and five touchdowns thus far this season. This could be an early preview of the Division I playoffs.
Brawley (2-0) at No. 8 Valley Center (2-0) Friday 7 p.m.
Valley Center has won its first two games by an average of 26 points and Brawley has won their first two by an average of 35. Something has to give when the Wildcats make the trip to Jaguar country. The game will be Brawley’s first road contest of the season and Valley Center’s first at home. Jaguars running back Stanton Upson ran for touchdowns of 46 and 51 yards last week and has help their offense cope with the loss of Tyler Bernard and James Johnson. The scoreboard operator will be busy in this one.
Other Games in the Red Zone
La Jolla Country Day (2-0) vs Bishop’s (1-0) at La Jolla High Friday 3 p.m. - Small school bragging rights in La Jolla will be on the line
