Norsemen fall to one of Maryland's best
Valhalla hung with a fast, physical Our Lady of Good Counsel team for three quarters at home on Friday night. But the Falcons were simply too much for the Norsemen, who fell 28-16 in their season opener to one of the best teams in Maryland.
“They are a physical team and they have some studs. That was a good game for us to be in,” said Valhalla coach Steve Sutton.
“Our kids weren’t intimidated and they played hard, they just came up short.”
After Good Counsel scored a touchdown on their opening drive both defenses tightened up, setting the tone in a physical affair. With 5:21 left in the first half, Valhalla made it 7-7 when quarterback Pete Thomas scored on an option keeper from four yards out. The teams went into the locker rooms tied.
“We were awful in the first half. I was sort of embarrassed to come all the way out here and struggle because Maryland football is pretty good, too,” said Good Counsel coach Bob Milloy.
Valhalla’s defense stood tall after the break, forcing a three-and-out on the opening drive of the half. The Norsemen took their first lead of the game on the ensuing drive, as Thomas kicked a 36-yard knuckleball through the uprights to cap a six-minute drive and put Valhalla ahead 10-7.
“Our defense played very well,” Sutton said. “They’re a very physical smashmouth team and they didn’t push us around. I thought our kids played pretty darn hard.”
Good Counsel took the lead back following the field goal with a 60- yard scoring drive topped off with a Michael Nittoli 25-yard touchdown run. After a missed extra point, the Falcons were ahead 13-10 late in the third.
Good Counsel’s defense delivered the knockout blow on the first play of the fourth quarter. Thomas dropped back to pass and his screen pass was picked off and returned for a touchdown by junior defensive tackle Joe Rosenblatt. The Falcons would extend their lead to 28-10 before Valhalla added a late touchdown.
“They were tough,” Milloy said. “They weren’t real big but they were tough kids and I’m just happy to get out of here.”
Thomas finished 24-for-41 for 202 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions against the fast, hard-hitting Good Counsel defense. The Arizona State verbal commit drew high praise from Milloy after the game.
“The quarterback is a great player. You have to get pressure on that guy and even then he gets away. He’s a legit player,” Milloy said. “I don’t think we’ll see anybody in our league anywhere near as good as that guy.”
Valhalla (0-1) hosts Grossmont (1-0) next Friday. Sutton said not to worry too much about the Norsemen.
“We’re just going to see what we did wrong and try to correct it and get ready to play Grossmont next week,” Sutton said. “The kids will be ready, they’ll play hard.”
