Santa Fe Christian wants it bad in win over Christian

At their weekly pasta dinner, heavyweight boxing champion Chris Byrd challenged Santa Fe Christian’s football team. Byrd shared his life motto, “how bad do you want it,” with the Eagles, which Santa Fe Christian head coach Nick Ruscetta used as motivation before their game against Christian on Saturday afternoon.

“I asked the boys how bad do you want it,” Ruscetta said. “We’re Christian’s sister school, we’ve lost to them two years in a row.”

Under the sun in Solana Beach, the Eagles desire was not a question. Santa Fe Christian shut out Christian for the first three quarters and went on to win 33-13 to remain undefeated.

“They’re a great team,” Ruscetta said. “They’ve got all the components and on paper they’re probably better but as far as heart goes I’d take our kids over anybody.”

Santa Fe Christian (7-0, 1-0 Coastal) was ahead 13-0 at halftime and extended their lead to 20 late in the third quarter when running back Travis Berglund scored a two-yard touchdown. Forty-two seconds into the fourth quarter, the Eagles made it 26-0 on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Keaton Giannotti to running back Sam Hoekstra.

Christian (5-3, 1-1) was able to get on the board in the fourth courtesy of a Tyrone Sauls 95-yard kickoff return and a Malcom Murphy rushing touchdown. But the Patriots could not get closer than 20 in the final quarter thanks to the Santa Fe Christian defense.

“That’s why we won. Defensively we’re tough,” Ruscetta said.

The Eagles rolled to victory without a completely healthy Hoekstra. Ruscetta said Santa Fe Christian’s star back was not feeling well all afternoon.

“First half he wasn’t himself and he was just struggling,” Ruscetta said. “I told him a great player even on his bad days should be good and he said ‘Coach I got you.’”

Santa Fe Christian’s win sets up a matchup next Saturday at home against Francis Parker (5-1, 1-0) in the biggest small school game of the season. The winner of that game will be one of the favorites to get the Small Schools South state bowl bid.

“They’re great,” Ruscetta said. “That’s going to be a war.” Christian is off next week.

The Patriots take on Bishop’s (4-2, 0-1) on Nov. 7.
