Game of the Week
Hoover (4-2, 0-1 Western) at No. 8 Mission Bay (6-0, 1-0) Friday 3 p.m.
Mission Bay has ruined homecomings at Lincoln and Point Loma each of the past two weeks. This week, the Buccaneers have their own Homecoming to celebrate when they welcome Hoover for a Friday matinee. Mission Bay quarterback Dillon Baxter is one of the best athletes in the section and has emerged this season as a terrific dual-threat quarterback. Last week Baxter had four rushing and two passing touchdowns in a win over Point Loma. Hoover slipped at La Jolla last week but prior to that the Cardinals won four in a row, with a defense allowing only eight points per game. Mission Bay has won two straight in the series, including a narrow 17-15 win last season.
Best of the Rest
No. 9 Lincoln (4-1-1, 1-0 Eastern) vs St. Augustine (5-1, 1-0) Friday 6:30 p.m. at San Diego High
In the first week of Eastern League play, both Lincoln and St. Augustine notched big upset wins. Whichever team can keep the momentum will be alone atop the Eastern standings. Expect an aerial shootout in this one that features two of the best passing attacks in the section. Since Lincoln re-opened, they have not beaten St. Augustine, including a 41-34 loss last year.
No. 6 Helix (5-1, 1-0 Grossmont South) at Steele Canyon (4-2, 1-0) Friday 7 p.m.
The Grossmont South title is Helix’s to lose. But if last week’s three-point win over Monte Vista was any indication, the Highlanders’ title defense will not be easy this season. Steele Canyon has won their last three games by an average of 39 points. The Cougars also might be after revenge – Helix has won the last three meetings.
Montgomery (4-3, 3-0 South Bay) at Olympian (6-0, 3-0) Friday 7 p.m.
In the seven-team South Bay League, these two are the only remaining unbeatens. That means whoever wins this one controls their own destiny for the rest of the season. No one has come close to the Eagles this season, as they have beaten their opponents by an average of 25 points. Montgomery has won the only two meetings between these two.
No. 7 Valley Center (6-0, 2-0 Valley) at Orange Glen (4-3, 0-3) Friday 7 p.m.
Heading into Valley League play, it looked like this matchup could determine the league title. Orange Glen has cooled off, starting league play with three losses. Can they end the skid against Valley Center? Jaguars running back Stanton Upson has led an offense averaging 30 points. Valley Center’s defense has been pretty good, too, allowing less than nine points per game.
