Escondido has made going undefeated look easy, outscoring their opponents 180-34 in four convincing wins. Thus far, no team has been able to control the Cougars’ backfield tandem of Ricky Seale and Tim Zier, including undefeated Rancho Bernardo last week. Is Vista’s blackshirt defense up to the challenge? Before losing to Mission Viejo on Sept. 25, the Panthers had allowed a combined 23 points in three wins. Last year, Vista beat Escondido 28-14.
Westview (3-1, 1-0 Valley) at No. 7 Valley Center (4-0, 0-0) Friday 7 p.m.
Last season, Valley Center lost two games – and one was against Westview. No doubt the Jaguars will be looking for revenge when the Wolverines make the trip up north. Valley Center has not played the most difficult preseason schedule, but they have still impressed, winning by an average of 25 points behind a strong rushing attack and a stout defense that has allowed less than six points per game. That defense will be tested against a Westview offense that is averaging 32 points per game and put up 49 in a win over Orange Glen last week. This is the Wolverines’ second-straight game against an unbeaten team.
Madison (3-1, 1-0 Central) at Santana (2-3) Friday 7 p.m.
Since losing to Mission Bay to open the season, Madison has averaged nearly 40 points game in three straight wins. Quarterback Lester Fontenette has completed 50 percent of his passes and thrown for 469 yards this season and rushed for another 640 yards. The Warhawks are in the third of a stretch of four road games. Santana has lost two straight but is still a perfect 2-0 at home. If the Sultans want a chance to stay that way on their home turf they will have to shore up a defense that has allowed 40 points per game in their last two. Madison has won two straight in the series.
Granite Hills (3-1) at West Hills (2-3) Friday 7 p.m.
Granite Hills is working hard to forget their one-win season of a year ago and with three wins in their first four it seems like they are well on their way. The Eagles’ only loss this season was a road defeat against undefeated Olympian. West Hills will be looking to bounce back from a 41-point loss last week against Valhalla. These teams are meeting for the first time since 2006, when Granite Hills won 17-14.
