Oceanside is one of a handful of San Diego Section teams that have beaten out-of-section opponents
Oceanside’s win over last Friday over national power Long Beach Poly was a landmark win not only for the Pirates, but for the San Diego Section as a whole. This preseason, section schools have made waves by taking on – and beating – some of the best programs both inside and outside of California.
“We were challenging ourselves individually and collectively as a team and we were trying to represent not just ourselves but also the county of San Diego,” Oceanside head coach John Carroll said after the Pirates beat Poly.
Local schools started flexing their muscle from the season’s opening whistle. On Sept. 4, Oceanside and Bonita Vista notched wins over Nevada schools Shadow Ridge and Reed. Other teams within the section played schools from all parts of California and Hawaii. And Valhalla hung with Our Lady of Good Counsel, currently ranked third in Maryland by MDVarsity.com, for three quarters before losing 28-16.
The following week, section schools went 5-2 against out-of-section opponents. The biggest win of that weekend was Francis Parker’s 35-20 win over St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano on Sept. 11, snapping the Tartans’ state-best 44-game winning streak.
“We got them on the schedule about halfway through last year,” said Francis Parker head coach John Morrison. “We thought that would be exciting to go up in that environment and get a chance to play them.”
After Coronado knocked off Laguna Beach on Sep. 18, the section notched a pair of big wins last week. In addition to Oceanside’s win over Poly, La Costa Canyon knocked off Santa Margarita 28-14 on the road.
Through four weeks of the season, San Diego Section teams are 15-10-1 against out-of section opponents. Although this record is not staggering, the losses have come to top teams in Hawaii (Kauai), Colorado (Louisville Monarch), and southern California’s Southern Section (Mission Viejo, Santa Margarita).
The section’s preseason success and schedule strength has not gone unnoticed. In CalHiSports most recent California Top 25 poll, Oceanside is No. 4 and La Costa Canyon is No. 21.
These games also might play a role in who gets sent to the state bowl games, which have had a San Diego participant for the past two years. Currently, Oceanside (Division I) and Francis Parker (Small Schools) are ranked as the top south representatives. La Costa Canyon, Escondido, Cathedral Catholic and Santa Fe Christian also appear in these rankings.
As Point Loma travels to take on CalHiSports state No. 16 Granite Bay in northern California tonight and Scripps Ranch heads north to face undefeated Fountain Valley, both teams will be representing the San Diego Section. This season, that San Diego tag is starting to carry some more respect.
